OUR MISSION
At Hands of Christ, we make it our mission to provide a safe and encouraging environment for children to learn, grow, and become successful citizens of our community.
The children we help often do not have the same opportunities that their peers have. Our goal is to equalize the success rate in classrooms so that each child has the same potential for success regardless of financial status, conditions at home, or cultural challenges.
We are a nonprofit organization funded entirely by a grant provided from an anonymous donor.
OUR STAFF
Over 30 men and women are devoted to helping the children at Hands of Christ. That includes a total of 12 certified teachers and a host of para-professionals, bus drivers, kitchen staff, and volunteers.
Each classroom of children is lead by 1 teacher who is assisted by a para-pro. The children spend an hour being tutored in their academic studies before they participate in various art projects, music activities, and games. Then they make their way to the dining hall for a delicious meal followed by some playground time. We make it a priority to teach our kids that learning can be fun and educate them on the potential opportunities they have for their future.
DIRECTOR
Jean Dudley taught in the Cartersville City School system for several years before devoting her time to setting up the Hands of Christ Afterschool Program. Her experiences teaching opened her eyes to the personal difficulties that certain students face compared to their other peers.
Fortunate children have parents who have experienced the benefits of receiving a higher education and are able to assist in their child's education at home. Other parents can afford to hire tutors and provide additional academic support when needed. However, there are also families who come from different backgrounds. They may not have been lucky enough to receive a formal education, or maybe they struggle with English as a secondary language. Many parents also have to work long hours to support their families and so they are limited in the time they can spend helping their children with homework.
By founding the Hands of Christ Afterschool Program, the First Presbyterian Church of Cartersville and Jean Dudley have accomplished the difficult task of making sure all children are equally capable of achieving success.
